AI-native ERP: the general ledgers with AI built in, compared

A new group of accounting systems put AI inside the general ledger itself rather than in a separate tool. Some, such as Rillet and Campfire, are aimed at mid-market and larger finance teams; others, such as Digits and Puzzle, target startups and small businesses. Here's how they compare on what each vendor documents, and how to decide between replacing your ledger and adding AI to the one you have.

Key points

What it means
An ERP or general ledger where AI assistants and agents work directly on the books: categorizing, proposing entries and accruals, reconciling and answering questions.
Three approaches
Replace the ledger with an AI-native one, use the AI your existing ERP now ships, or add an AI close and reconciliation layer on top.
Review models differ
Rillet says nothing posts without a person's approval; Campfire lets users set confidence thresholds; Digits posts high-confidence transaction categorizations automatically.
It's a migration
Replacing a general ledger means moving history, integrations and reports, and your auditors working on a new system. Weigh that before the AI.

The label is used loosely. Docyt, for example, now markets itself as an AI-native ERP while listing integrations with QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, NetSuite and Xero. Check whether a product replaces your general ledger or works alongside it.

Rillet
A cloud ERP and general ledger for mid-market, enterprise and public-company finance teams. It automates journal entries, ASC 606 revenue recognition and close tasks across entities and currencies. Its Aura assistant answers questions on live ledger data, and Aura Agents run recurring tasks from rules written in plain English. Rillet's security page says AI agent actions go to a person for approval and nothing posts without it. Listing.
Campfire
An ERP combining a general ledger, revenue automation, reconciliations, close management and reporting, for growing mid-market and enterprise companies. Its Ember assistant and agents answer questions with links to source records and propose entries and matches, applied or reviewed according to confidence thresholds users set. Campfire says its proprietary accounting model runs in its own environment, and that Ember doesn't train on customers' proprietary data. Listing.
NetSuite Next
Oracle NetSuite's AI-focused generation of its cloud ERP, adding the Ask Oracle assistant, agentic workflows and AI in close management; related NetSuite AI features include an MCP-based connector for outside AI tools. An established ERP adding AI rather than a new ledger. See NetSuite AI and Rillet vs NetSuite.
Digits
A general ledger with AI built in for small businesses, startups and the accounting firms that serve them. It categorizes transactions with confidence scores, posts high-confidence items automatically and sends the rest to a review checklist, and drafts accrual and depreciation entries. Listing.
Puzzle
Accounting software with its own general ledger for startups, small businesses and the bookkeepers that serve them. AI agents prepare categorization, reconciliation and close work, and a person approves proposed entries before they post. Listing.
Kick
An AI-driven general ledger and bookkeeping app for small-business owners and the firms that serve them, with categorization as transactions arrive, document matching, reconciliation and multi-entity support. Listing.

Replace the ledger, or add AI on top?

An AI-native ledger can only do its best work if it is the system of record, but changing the system of record is a major decision. Points to weigh:

  • Migration. Opening balances, transaction history, subledgers, integrations and saved reports all have to move, and you may still need the old system for look-backs.
  • Audit. Your auditors will need to understand and test a new system. Ask the vendor for references from customers audited on the platform.
  • Revenue recognition. If you need ASC 606 automation, Rillet documents it from contract data and Campfire includes revenue automation; Numeric adds revenue recognition alongside an existing ERP.
  • Entities and currencies. Rillet documents multi-entity and multi-currency close; confirm the specifics for any vendor against your structure.
  • Outside AI access. Rillet, Digits and NetSuite document MCP connectors that let outside AI tools work with ledger data; NetSuite's operates under role-based permissions, and Digits limits write access by locked accounting periods.
  • Alternatively, keep the ledger. A close or reconciliation tool such as Numeric, Ledge or Truewind adds AI to month-end work while QuickBooks, NetSuite or Sage Intacct stays the system of record. See AI reconciliation and close software.

Questions to ask an AI-native ERP vendor

Before you replace a general ledger

  • What can the AI post without a person's approval, and who sets those thresholds?
  • Are AI actions logged with who approved them, and can they be reversed?
  • Does the vendor or its model providers train on our data? Which model providers process it, and where?
  • Does the SOC 2 Type 2 report cover the AI features and name the model providers as subservice organizations?
  • How is migration handled: history, opening balances, subledgers and integrations? What does a full data export look like if we leave?
  • Which customers of our size and complexity are audited on the platform?
  • How is pricing calculated, and what's included in implementation?

AI-native ERP: questions

What is an AI-native ERP?
An ERP or general ledger built with AI assistants and agents working directly on the books, rather than an established system with AI added later or a separate AI tool on top. Rillet and Campfire are examples aimed at mid-market and larger companies; Digits and Puzzle target startups and small businesses.
What is Rillet?
A cloud ERP and general ledger with AI built in, aimed at mid-market, enterprise and public-company finance teams. It automates journal entries, ASC 606 revenue recognition and close tasks, and says AI agent actions go to a person for approval. See the Rillet listing.
What is Campfire ERP?
An ERP with AI built in that combines a general ledger, revenue automation, reconciliations, close management and reporting for growing mid-market and enterprise companies. Its Ember agents propose entries and matches according to confidence thresholds users set. See the Campfire listing.
Rillet vs Campfire: what's the difference?
Both are ERPs with AI built into the ledger for mid-market and larger finance teams, and both state SOC 2 Type II reports. They differ in review model: Rillet says AI agent actions need a person's approval, while Campfire lets users set confidence thresholds for what applies automatically. Compare them field by field in Rillet vs Campfire.
Is NetSuite an AI-native ERP?
NetSuite is an established cloud ERP. NetSuite Next is its AI-focused generation, adding the Ask Oracle assistant, agentic workflows and AI in close management. See NetSuite AI.
Do AI ERPs post journal entries automatically?
It varies. Rillet and Puzzle say a person approves AI-proposed entries before they post. Campfire applies or routes agent actions by confidence thresholds users set. Digits posts high-confidence transaction categorizations automatically, sends lower-confidence ones to review, and drafts accrual entries for review.
