Will AI replace bookkeepers? What the federal projections show
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk jobs to decline 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, and it names software automation as the reason. It also expects about 144,100 openings a year over the decade. Here is the federal data, what BLS says about technology, and what AI bookkeeping tools automate.
Key points
- A projected decline
- BLS projects employment to fall from 1,532,400 jobs in 2025 to 1,446,800 in 2035, a loss of about 85,600, or 6 percent.
- Still hiring
- About 144,100 openings a year are projected over the decade, all from replacing workers who retire or move to other occupations.
- Why
- BLS says software has automated many clerk tasks, so the same amount of work can be done with fewer employees.
- Where the role is heading
- BLS expects the remaining work to become more analytical and advisory, such as reviewing clients' books for efficiency gains instead of entering data by hand.
The BLS numbers for bookkeepers
BLS counts bookkeepers in the occupation "bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks" (SOC code 43-3031). The 2025 to 2035 projections were released on August 27, 2026, and pay figures are from the May 2025 wage survey.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Jobs, 2025 | 1,532,400 |
| Projected jobs, 2035 | 1,446,800 |
| Change, 2025 to 2035 | −85,600 (−6%) |
| Openings a year, on average | 144,100 |
| Median pay, May 2025 | $50,670 a year ($24.36 an hour) |
| Pay range | Lowest 10% earned less than $36,000; highest 10% more than $74,550 |
| Typical entry-level education | Some college, no degree |
| Typical on-the-job training | Moderate-term on-the-job training |
Openings stay high despite the decline because people retire and change careers. BLS expects all of the openings to come from replacing those workers rather than from new jobs, so a shrinking occupation still hires.
What BLS says about technology and bookkeeping
The Occupational Outlook Handbook (opens in a new tab) is direct about the cause of the decline:
- “Technological change is expected to reduce demand for these workers.”
- “Software innovations have automated many of the tasks performed by bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks.”
- “As a result, the same amount of work can be done with fewer employees, which is expected to lead to job losses over the projections decade.”
It also describes where the job is heading. With more automation of routine tasks, BLS says clerks "are expected to take on a more analytical and advisory role over the decade. For example, rather than entering data by hand, these workers may focus on analyzing their clients' books and pointing out potential areas for efficiency gains."
More broadly, BLS's 2025 to 2035 release (opens in a new tab) says the continued integration of automation tools, including those powered by AI, is likely to reduce demand for several office and administrative support occupations, the group that includes bookkeeping clerks. That group is projected to shed 752,100 jobs (−4.0 percent), the most of any major occupational group.
How bookkeeping compares with nearby jobs
| Occupation | Change in jobs | Change | BLS ranking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks | −85,600 | −5.6% | 5th-largest job decline |
| Data entry keyers | −33,600 | −25.5% | 9th-largest job decline; 4th-fastest decline |
| Payroll and timekeeping clerks | −25,400 | −15.9% | 15th-largest job decline; 17th-fastest decline |
| Bill and account collectors | −16,700 | −10.4% | 21st-largest job decline |
| Accountants and auditors | +79,400 | +5.0% | Projected to grow faster than average |
Bookkeeping ranks high for jobs lost because the occupation is large. In percentage terms its decline is smaller than for payroll clerks or data entry keyers, and it isn't on BLS's list of fastest-declining occupations. Accountants and auditors, an occupation that typically requires a bachelor's degree, is projected to grow. See Will AI replace accountants?
What AI bookkeeping tools automate
AI bookkeeping tools aim at routine, high-volume work: coding bank and card transactions, capturing receipts and bills, and matching transactions for reconciliation. Here is how the bookkeeping tools in the directory describe review, counted from each vendor's documentation:
| How the vendor describes review | Tools |
|---|---|
| A person reviews before output takes effect | 13 |
| Customer sets rules for what skips review | 9 |
| Processes without review by default | 1 |
| Not described by the vendor | 0 |
| Tools listed | 23 |
| Tool | What its documentation says |
|---|---|
| BotkeeperBookkeeping | Per-client machine learning models that categorize uncategorized bank transactions and return a confidence level for each |
| Booke AIBookkeeping | Categorizes bank-feed transactions each day inside QuickBooks Online and Xero |
| DigitsBookkeeping | Categorizes incoming transactions, assigns each a confidence score, and routes low-confidence items to a review checklist |
| DocytBookkeeping | Codes bank and card transactions with confidence scores and sends uncertain items to review |
| KickBookkeeping | Categorizes transactions into categories, classes and ledger accounts as they arrive, for the user to review |
| PuzzleBookkeeping | AI agents that categorize transactions and reconcile accounts, flagging exceptions |
| PilotBookkeeping | AI accountant that categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts and closes the books monthly |
| ZeniBookkeeping | AI accountant agent that categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts and matches receipts |
| Intuit Intelligence (QuickBooks)Bookkeeping | Categorizes transactions and assists with bank reconciliations (Accounting AI) |
Several of these describe routing low-confidence items to a person or letting the customer set what posts automatically. Reviewing those suggestions, handling exceptions and explaining the numbers to clients remain bookkeeping work. Compare tools on SOC 2 and data use in AI bookkeeping software.
What this means if you're a bookkeeper
- Expect less data entry. BLS's own example of the changing role is analyzing clients' books instead of entering data by hand.
- Review becomes the work. Categorization rules, exception queues and reconciliation reports all need someone who knows what right looks like.
- The close is a skill set. Running a reliable month-end close is review and judgment work; see the month-end close checklist.
- Credentials are optional but available. BLS says certification isn't usually required but can help demonstrate competency.
- Accounting is the growing occupation. Accountants and auditors are projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035; BLS says the role typically requires a bachelor's degree.
Will AI replace bookkeepers?: questions
- Will AI replace bookkeepers?
- BLS projects a decline, not a disappearance. Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk jobs are projected to fall 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 1,532,400 to 1,446,800, with about 144,100 openings a year. BLS attributes the decline to software automating many of the tasks.
- Is bookkeeping a dying career?
- It's shrinking, not ending. It's fifth on BLS's list of occupations with the largest job declines for 2025 to 2035, but BLS still projects about 144,100 openings a year and expects the remaining work to become more analytical and advisory.
- How much do bookkeepers make?
- BLS reports a median annual wage of $50,670 for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $36,000 and the highest 10 percent more than $74,550.
- What bookkeeping tasks can AI do?
- Tools in the directory document categorizing bank and card transactions, extracting data from receipts and bills, matching transactions for reconciliation and drafting month-end entries. Several send low-confidence items to a person; see AI bookkeeping software.
- Do you need a degree to be a bookkeeper?
- BLS lists the typical entry-level education as some college, no degree, with moderate-term on-the-job training. It says most bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks are required to have some postsecondary education.
