Findings
- 34 of 72 (47%) AI accounting tools don't publish a clear answer on whether they use customer data to train AI models.
- A SOC 2 report isn't a training policy: 19 of the 44 tools that state a SOC 2 Type II report don't say whether they train on customer data.
- Public companies answer the training question more often: 1 of 10 publicly traded companies leave it unanswered, against 26 of 50 private companies.
- Tools for small businesses are the most open about price and the least likely to rule out training on customer data: 15 of 18 (83%) publish a price, and 2 of 18 say they don't train on customer data.
- Tools sold to enterprises rarely publish prices: 2 of 22 (9%) publish one.
- A person still checks the work at most tools: 44 of 72 (61%) describe human review of AI output by default, 20 let the customer choose, and 2 describe processing without review by default.
- 8 tools say customer data is used for AI training in some form; the terms differ, so read each listing.

How this report was made
- The 72 tools are the directory’s listings on October 15, 2026: AI software for accounting work whose features could be confirmed on official pages. It isn’t a census of the market.
- Each field records what the vendor’s own pages state. “Unclear” and “unconfirmed” mean we found no published statement either way, not that the answer is no. Definitions are in the methodology.
- The records behind this report are frozen in a snapshot file (JSON), licensed CC BY 4.0. Later reports compare against it.
- Questions or a custom cut of the data: for journalists.
