AI audit software

AI audit tools analyze full populations of journal entries and transactions, extract evidence from documents, tie out workpapers, and draft documentation. Auditors remain responsible for judgments, so the review trail each tool keeps matters as much as what it automates.

What the listings show

Of the 9 audit tools listed, 8 state that they hold a SOC 2 Type II report, and 6 publish a policy saying customer data is not used to train AI models. 0 publish prices. Everything else is marked unconfirmed until the vendor says so in writing.

Which ledgers they work with

Integrations each vendor documents with QuickBooks Online (QBO), Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct (Intacct) and Microsoft Dynamics. A dash means none is documented, not that one is impossible.

How AI is used in auditing

AI in auditing is less about replacing judgment than about changing what is practical to test. The tools in this category work in four places:

Full-population analytics
Scoring every journal entry or transaction for unusual characteristics, instead of testing a sample chosen by hand.
Evidence extraction
Reading invoices, bank statements, contracts and confirmations and matching them to the ledger, often called vouching and tracing.
Documentation
Drafting workpaper narratives, disclosure checklists and financial statement tie-outs for an auditor to review.
Risk assessment
Suggesting risks and affected assertions from the trial balance, prior-year files and client documents.

Some run inside Excel, where most audit workpapers still live; others run inside an audit platform or as a separate web application. That choice often matters more to adoption than the AI itself.

The auditor still owns the conclusion

Professional standards hold the engagement team responsible for the sufficiency and appropriateness of audit evidence, however it is gathered. A tool that flags a hundred entries hasn't tested them; someone has to decide what the flags mean and document why.

For audits under PCAOB standards, that responsibility now has specific language. The PCAOB amended AS 1105, Audit Evidence, and AS 2301 (opens in a new tab), The Auditor's Responses to the Risks of Material Misstatement, to address audit procedures that use technology to analyze electronic data. The amendments apply to audits of financial statements for fiscal years beginning on or after December 15, 2025.

That makes the review trail the most important feature to examine. Look for links from each extracted figure to its source document, a record of who accepted or overrode the tool's suggestion, and the version of the analysis that was relied on.

External audit, internal audit and SOC work

Several vendors sell to both CPA firms and corporate teams. External audit tools are built around engagement files and firm methodology. Internal audit and controls teams tend to need continuous monitoring and SOX testing. A few platforms also run SOC 1 and SOC 2 examinations and other attestation work for CPA firms. Check the Built for field and the vendor's own description before assuming a tool fits your practice.

Questions to ask an audit AI vendor

  • Can each AI-extracted value be traced to the page and cell it came from?
  • Is client data used to train models, including models shared across firms?
  • Where is client data stored, and can the firm set retention to match its own document retention policy?
  • Does the tool work with the firm's existing audit platform and methodology, or replace them?
  • What does the vendor's own SOC 2 report cover, and when was the last one issued?

AI audit software: questions

How is AI used in auditing?
Common uses include risk scoring of journal entries across the full population, extracting and matching evidence from invoices and contracts, and drafting workpaper documentation for an auditor to review.
How is AI used in auditing?
Common uses are scoring full populations of journal entries for risk, extracting and matching evidence from source documents, drafting workpaper documentation and disclosure checklists, and suggesting risks during planning. An auditor reviews and concludes on the results.
Do PCAOB standards address AI and data analytics in audits?
The PCAOB amended AS 1105 and AS 2301 to address audit procedures that involve technology-assisted analysis of electronic information. The amendments are effective for audits of fiscal years beginning on or after December 15, 2025. They address auditors' use of software tools to analyze electronic data as part of gathering audit evidence.
Will AI replace auditors?
Federal projections don't point that way. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of accountants and auditors to grow over the decade to 2035. AI tools change how testing and documentation are done, but auditors remain responsible for the evidence and the opinion.
Is AI audit software secure enough for client data?
That depends on the vendor's controls and terms. Each listing shows whether the vendor states a SOC 2 report and what its policy says about training models on customer data, with links to the source.
