AI CFO tools: what they do, what they cost, and where they stop
"AI CFO" is used for two different things: software agents that build forecasts and answer finance questions from your connected data, and finance services where AI works alongside a human team or fractional CFO. Here's what the tools in the directory document, what they publish about price, and what a person still has to own.
Key points
- Two meanings
- AI agents inside planning or accounting software, and AI-assisted services that include people, such as a fractional CFO.
- What the software does
- Builds and updates forecasts from connected data, runs scenarios, explains variances, sends alerts and drafts board updates.
- What it costs
- cfo.ai's Startup plan is $375 a month billed annually; Digits, whose assistant answers questions about the books, starts at $65 a month. CFO services from Zeni and Pilot start at $1,599 and $1,750 a month.
- Where it stops
- Some vendors, such as cfo.ai and Zeni, describe proposals and items that people review. Decisions, judgment and accountability to a board stay with people.
What an AI CFO is
| Kind | What you get | Examples in the directory |
|---|---|---|
| AI CFO software | An agent connected to accounting, payroll, banking and billing data that builds a model, forecasts, answers questions and flags changes | cfo.ai (Ari), Digits (Ask Digits), FP&A tools such as Datarails, Planful, Cube and Drivetrain |
| AI-assisted finance services | Bookkeeping and CFO work delivered by a human team using AI, sold as a service | Zeni (AI CFO agent plus a dedicated finance team and fractional CFO plans), Pilot (bookkeeping plus CFO plans) |
The software suits founders and lean finance teams who want a live model without building one. The services suit companies that want the work done, with people accountable for it.

Where an AI CFO stops
Some vendors describe their agents as proposing rather than deciding. cfo.ai's documentation says Ari changes the model when a user asks for or agrees to a change and that its values are proposals until reviewed, and Zeni says its AI sends uncertain transactions to people. That leaves these with people:
- Assumptions. Growth, pricing, hiring and churn assumptions drive any forecast. An agent can model them; someone has to choose them and defend them.
- Decisions. Whether to raise, cut, hire or price differently is a business decision the tools inform but don't make.
- Accountability. Board reporting, lender covenants and investor updates carry someone's name.
- Books that are right. A forecast built on miscategorized actuals is wrong with confidence. The close comes first; see the month-end close checklist.

Choosing an AI CFO tool
What to check
- Which ledgers, payroll and billing systems it connects to, and how often it syncs.
- Whether you can see and edit the model's formulas and drivers, not just the answers.
- Whether what-if scenarios are kept separate from the base forecast.
- What the agent can change without your approval.
- SOC 2 status and whether your data trains the vendor's or its providers' models.
- Whether you need software, a service with people, or both, and what the total monthly cost is.
AI CFO: questions
- What is an AI CFO?
- Either software with an AI agent that builds forecasts, runs scenarios and answers finance questions from your connected data, or a finance service where AI supports a human team or fractional CFO. cfo.ai is an example of the first; Zeni and Pilot offer the second.
- Can AI replace a CFO?
- The tools in the directory document forecasts, variance explanations, alerts and drafted board updates, and some, such as cfo.ai, describe their output as proposals for people to review. Choosing assumptions, making decisions and answering to a board stay with people. BLS projects financial manager jobs to grow 10 percent from 2025 to 2035.
- How much does an AI CFO cost?
- Published prices in the directory include $375 a month for cfo.ai's Startup plan (billed annually) and $65 a month for Digits Essentials, and from $1,599 a month plus setup (Zeni CFO Lite) and $1,750 a month (Pilot CFO Basic) for CFO services. FP&A platforms such as Datarails and Cube sell by quote.
- Is cfo.ai the same as Runway?
- Yes. cfo.ai was formerly called Runway. It's financial planning software for startup founders built around Ari, an AI agent. See the cfo.ai listing.
- What's the difference between an AI CFO and a fractional CFO?
- An AI CFO tool is software you run yourself. A fractional CFO is a person who works for your company part-time; services such as Zeni and Pilot combine fractional CFO work with AI and their own bookkeeping.
