Claude for accounting and finance: what it does, what it costs, and your data

Anthropic now sells Claude to finance teams in several pieces: the chat assistant itself, add-ins for Excel and the other Microsoft 365 apps, a Finance plugin with commands for journal entries and reconciliations, agent templates for the close, and connectors to accounting software. This guide sets out what each piece does from Anthropic's own pages, what it costs, what Anthropic says about client data, and where a person still has to sign off. Key points

Four ways in
Chat on claude.ai, the Claude for Excel add-in, plugins such as Anthropic's Finance plugin in Claude Cowork, and connectors that let Claude read data from accounting tools such as Numeric, Rillet or Validis.
For the close
Anthropic's Finance plugin has commands for journal entries, reconciliations, income statements, variance analysis and SOX testing workpapers. Its agent templates include a general ledger reconciler and a month-end closer.
Human sign-off
Anthropic says Finance plugin output should be reviewed by qualified professionals before reporting or filing, and that its financial services agents don't post to a ledger; their output is staged for sign-off.
Client data
On Team and Enterprise, Anthropic says it doesn't train on your inputs or outputs by default. Personal plans list training as opt-out, so client work belongs in a business workspace.

Anthropic's Finance plugin

Anthropic describes its Finance plugin (opens in a new tab) as covering "journal entries, reconciliation, financial statements, and variance analysis," and supporting the month-end close from booking accruals to producing the P&L. It installs in Claude Cowork and can connect to an ERP, data warehouse or spreadsheet through MCP, or work from data you paste or upload.

Finance plugin commands, as described on Anthropic's plugin page
CommandWhat Anthropic says it does
/journal-entryPrepares accrual, fixed asset, prepaid and payroll entries with debits and credits
/reconciliationCompares general ledger balances to subledger, bank or third-party balances and identifies reconciling items
/income-statementGenerates an income statement with period-over-period comparison
/variance-analysisBreaks variances down into drivers, with waterfall analysis
/sox-testingCreates SOX compliance testing workpapers

Agent templates for the close and reconciliations

On May 5, 2026, Anthropic released ten agent templates for financial services. Three are accounting work (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)):

General ledger reconciler
Reconciles GL accounts and runs net asset value calculations against the books of record. Anthropic's repository describes it finding breaks, tracing root causes and routing them for sign-off.
Month-end closer
Runs the close checklist, prepares journal entries and produces close reports; the repository lists accruals, roll-forwards and variance commentary.
Statement auditor
Reviews financial statements for consistency, completeness and audit-readiness. In the repository, it's aimed at limited partner statements before distribution.

These templates were built for fund administration and finance operations at financial services firms, and Anthropic says firms adapt them to their own conventions and approval flows. They run as plugins in Claude Cowork or Claude Code, or as Claude Managed Agents, which Anthropic listed as a public beta at launch. The open-source repository (opens in a new tab) is explicit about limits: the agents "do not make investment recommendations, execute transactions, bind risk, post to a ledger, or approve onboarding," and their output is staged for a person to sign off.

The same repository includes an Excel model audit skill that traces formulas, detects hardcoded numbers and checks that balances tie. Anthropic's February 2026 finance announcement added partner plugins from LSEG and S&P Global (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)).

Accounting tools that connect to Claude

Several tools in the directory document a connector, usually an MCP server, that lets Claude read their data and in some cases take actions under the signed-in user's permissions:

Directory tools that document a Claude connector or MCP server
ToolWhat its documentation says
RilletClose & reconciliationMCP access so outside tools such as Claude, Salesforce and Snowflake can read from and write to the ledger
NumericClose & reconciliationMCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools query Numeric data with the user's permissions
ZeniBookkeepingZeni MCP, which connects a company's books to outside AI assistants such as Claude and Codex
KickBookkeepingMCP and CLI access so AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude can read and update books; scheduled agent tasks across clients in early access
ValidisAuditValidis MCP: a read-only, audit-logged connector that brings standardized ledger data into Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Excel and other MCP-compatible tools
PlanfulFP&ARead-only MCP server lets users query Planful data from Claude under existing access controls
PigmentFP&AMCP server that gives outside AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude governed access to Pigment data
AgicapCash & treasuryAgicap MCP Server gives AI clients such as Claude governed access to Agicap's financial data and forecasts
TesorioAR & collectionsAI Chat & MCP brings live AR data into ChatGPT and Claude
UpflowAR & collectionsUpflow MCP runs AR analysis inside Claude and ChatGPT
BilltrustAR & collectionsMCP Server gives Claude and Microsoft Copilot read-only access to invoicing, payments, cash application and AR analytics data
ExpensifySpend & expensesExpensify MCP connects a company's Expensify data to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients with OAuth 2.1 sign-in
Financial CentsPractice managementMCP connector (Scale plan) lets outside assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini query and act on firm data within user permissions
UkuPractice managementMCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT or other MCP-capable assistants read firm data and take actions under the signed-in user's own permissions (Elite plan)
AiwynPractice managementOfficial Claude connector (Phase 1, for exploration with anonymized data): Claude does the reasoning and Aiwyn's engine does the deterministic tax calculations

Read the write permissions closely. A read-only connector, such as Validis's or Planful's, lets Claude answer questions; one that can update books, such as Kick's or Rillet's, puts Claude's actions in your ledger, which needs the same approval controls as any other user.

For market and company data, Anthropic lists connectors including FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, MSCI, PitchBook, Morningstar, LSEG and Daloopa, and a Moody's app (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)).

What Anthropic says about client data

Team, Enterprise and the API
"By default, we will not use your inputs or outputs from our commercial products ... to train our models." The exception is feedback you explicitly submit, such as a thumbs up or down, which Anthropic keeps for up to five years, de-linked from your account. Team and Enterprise owners can turn off that feedback for their members (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)).
Free, Pro, Max and Ultra
Anthropic's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on these plans, and its privacy center says consumer chats can be used to improve Claude when you allow it (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)). Check the privacy setting on any personal account, and keep client data off personal accounts.
The Excel add-in
Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's back end within 30 days, with exceptions; the add-in doesn't follow an organization's custom retention settings (Anthropic (opens in a new tab)).

Tax preparers have one more rule to clear: using an outside AI service with tax return information can require the taxpayer's consent under Section 7216. See Section 7216 consent for AI. How Claude's terms compare with ChatGPT's, Copilot's and Gemini's is in AI chatbots for accounting.

Setting Claude up for a firm or finance team

Claude for accounting: setup checks

  • Put client and company data in a Team or Enterprise workspace, not personal accounts.
  • Decide who may install plugins and connectors, and prefer read-only connectors until you've tested write access.
  • Give each Claude-prepared entry, reconciliation or workpaper a named reviewer, as you would a preparer's.
  • Keep posting rights in your ledger with people or with controls you already audit; Anthropic's own agents stage output for sign-off rather than posting.
  • Turn off thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback for the organization if you don't want conversations sent to Anthropic that way.
  • Write the rules into a firm AI policy, including Section 7216 consent for tax work.

For a policy to adapt, see the AI acceptable use policy template.

Claude for accounting: questions

Can Claude do accounting?
It can prepare a lot of accounting work for review. Anthropic's Finance plugin drafts journal entries, reconciliations, income statements, variance analysis and SOX testing workpapers, and Claude for Excel works on schedules and models. Anthropic says outputs should be reviewed by qualified professionals, and its financial services agents don't post to a ledger.
What is Claude for Financial Services?
Anthropic's set of finance offerings: Claude for Excel and the other Microsoft 365 add-ins, financial services plugins and skills, ten agent templates released on May 5, 2026, and connectors to data providers such as FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, LSEG and Daloopa.
Is Claude safe for client data?
On Team and Enterprise plans, Anthropic says it doesn't train on inputs or outputs by default, apart from feedback you explicitly submit. Personal plans list training as opt-out. Use a business workspace for client data, check engagement terms, and get Section 7216 consent where tax return information is involved.
How much does Claude cost for an accounting firm?
Anthropic lists Team Standard seats at $20 per user per month billed annually ($25 monthly) for teams of 2 to 150, Premium seats at $100 ($125 monthly), and Enterprise at $20 per seat per month billed annually with a 20-seat minimum plus usage at API rates.
Does Claude connect to accounting software?
Claude connects through connectors, usually MCP servers that the software vendor provides. Several directory tools document one, including Rillet, Numeric, Zeni, Kick and Validis. What Claude can do depends on each connector's permissions, so check whether it's read-only.
