AI bookkeeping software
AI bookkeeping tools read bank feeds, receipts and bills, suggest or post categorizations, and flag transactions that need a person. Some are software you run yourself; others are services where the vendor's staff review the books, with AI doing the first pass.
That difference matters more than any feature list. A product that posts entries without review behaves very differently at month-end from one that queues suggestions for an accountant to approve.

What the listings show
Of the 23 bookkeeping tools listed, 14 state that they hold a SOC 2 Type II report, and 7 publish a policy saying customer data is not used to train AI models. 16 publish prices. Everything else is marked unconfirmed until the vendor says so in writing.
Which ledgers they work with
Integrations each vendor documents with QuickBooks Online (QBO), Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct (Intacct) and Microsoft Dynamics. A dash means none is documented, not that one is impossible.
Three ways AI bookkeeping is sold
The phrase AI bookkeeping covers products that work very differently. Knowing which one you are looking at answers most of the other questions.
- Software on your ledger
- Tools that connect to QuickBooks Online or Xero, categorize bank-feed transactions, match receipts and flag exceptions, while the ledger stays the system of record.
- A new ledger with AI built in
- Products that replace QuickBooks or Xero with their own general ledger, designed around automated categorization and reconciliation.
- A service
- Bookkeeping delivered by the vendor's own staff, with AI doing the first pass. You buy closed books, not software.
The human review field on each listing records which of these the vendor describes, and whether a person reviews entries before they post.
AI bookkeeping for accounting firms
Firms that do client accounting work have a different problem from a single business: dozens or hundreds of client files, each with its own chart of accounts and quirks. Tools built for firms keep separate models or rules per client, show the confidence behind each suggestion, and let a reviewer approve in bulk. Filter by Built for: CPA firms to see them.
Before you connect a bank feed
- Does the tool write entries to the ledger, or only suggest them?
- Can you see why it chose a category, and correct it so the next one is right?
- What does the vendor's policy say about training models on your transactions?
- If you leave, can you take your rules and history with you?
AI bookkeeping software: questions
- Can AI do bookkeeping without an accountant?
- Some tools describe automated categorization and posting, but most vendors in this directory keep a person in the loop for review, exceptions or month-end close. Check the human review field on each listing, which links to the vendor's own description.
- What is automated bookkeeping?
- Software that does the routine parts of bookkeeping with less manual entry: importing bank and card transactions, reading receipts and bills, suggesting or posting categories, and matching transactions for reconciliation. How much is automated, and who reviews it, varies by product; each listing shows what the vendor documents.
- Does AI bookkeeping software replace QuickBooks or Xero?
- It depends on the product. Some tools sit on top of QuickBooks Online or Xero and write entries back to them; a few act as the general ledger themselves. Each listing shows the ledger integrations the vendor documents.
- What is AI bookkeeping?
- Software or services that use machine learning or language models to categorize transactions, match receipts and invoices, reconcile accounts and flag anomalies. Some sit on top of QuickBooks Online or Xero; some replace the ledger; some are services where the vendor's staff review the books.
- Will AI replace bookkeepers?
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to decline 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, noting that software has automated many of their tasks. Most AI bookkeeping products in this directory still describe a person reviewing entries or exceptions.
